When to give advice and when not to

June 23, 2012

I’ve been a minister for over 20 years now… seen so many people healed, set free and on to their own ministries. I’ve learned along the way how to stay free from the heavy burden’s of other people’s problems, and that was a huge help in me not getting “burned out.” But, now I have another piece of information I’d like to share with you.

For the past few months, I’ve been ministering to several people. I was starting to get caught up in their “lives” again. Then I heard the Lord say to me, “Stop giving advice, give the gospel truth.” Well, that was a week or so ago and my life has gotten even freer. As a minister, we do give insights, teach, and advice. But, I’m not leaving off the advice part. So now when someone asks me for advice, I have to gracefully bow out of that request, and direct them to the Lord who will give them what they need.

See, our job as minister is to teach the truth. We can water, and plant, but God gives the increase, and that includes getting revelation, healing and deliverance. We are to “do” the Word… that means for me as a minister, to love each other, to be patient and kind to one another, to live according to the Word of God. And as we do that, and as we impact other people’s lives by living this way, it is God who will bring that person to their knees, to repentance, to change.

2 Timothy 2:24-26 says, And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.

This is a clear message to us all….  to live and follow Christ, with the fruit of the spirit, teaching and instructing SO THAT GOD can bring them into the healing and deliverance they so desire, so that they can learn to recover themselves from the snare of the devil. If we keep doing it for them, they will never learn…

So the question is, when do we give advice? Never…   we give the truth of the Word of God, and let them seek out advice from the Lord. As I’ve looked over the past where I’ve given advice, some came out okay, some did not…  So it’s best not to give any at all, and let the individual decide for themselves what they should do or not do.

If people want you to tell them what God is saying, they are being greatly deceived… Because everyone who who is a believer HAS the Holy Ghost… and can hear from Him directly. The Bible says that the spirit “knows all things” so if He’s in you, then  you can know what you need to know directly from Him.

What I do help people discover for themselves is what could be blocking them from hearing from God… but not to tell them what “I think” God is saying to them… unless of course it is a truly prophetic word for them….
